About the Salient Achievements of the Department:   The Department of Pathology was established in the erstwhile Assam Veterinary College in 1949 as the Department of Pathology and Bacteriology. The Department was engaged in teaching at undergraduate level, besides the routine diagnosis of diseases of livestock and poultry. In 1975, the department was bifurcated into two independent departments namely, the Department of Pathology and the Department of Microbiology. With the establishment of Assam Agricultural University 1969, teaching, research and extension activities became the mandate of the university. The MVSc degree programme was started in 1974. Subsequently, the PhD programme in the department was started from 1986. The Department was led by the following personalities from time to time as under � Dr. H. K. Gohain, Dr. D. D. Das, Dr. M. S. Kwatra, Dr. B. Choudhury, Dr. B. M. Dutta, Dr. A. Mukit, Dr. G. K. Baruah and Dr. T. Rahman. Now Dr. G. K. Baruah is the head of the Department. The Department has successfully convened two Annual conferences of Indian Association of Veterinary Pathologists in 1988 and 2010. The Department also organized �Workshop on health management of wild animals for veterinarians and first convention o0f Association of Wildlife Veterinarians�in 1999 sponsored by the Central Zoo Authority, India. The Department has its own building and has well-equipped laboratory facilities for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research. The Department is offering all courses of Veterinary Pathology as per VCI at undergraduate and as per ICAR syllabus at post graduate level Till date Assam Agricultural University has awarded 9 PhD and 47 mVSc degrees to the students from this Department. The teachers of the Department take active part in extension camps organised by the Associate Directorate of Extension Education; Department of Extension Education; NRC Pig etc. whenever scopes come The teachers are called for delivering talks through AIR and TV for the benefit of the farming community.
